Halimah Yacob appointment of Sheng Siong’s CEO as key campaign member does not help ease concerns of her independence

At a media conference on 29 Aug, Presidential hopeful Halimah Yacob told everyone that she serves Singaporeans and nothing else.

“I know my loyalty lies with Singapore and Singaporeans and nothing else. Whatever I have done has always been in putting the interests of people first, rather than looking at the party colours.”

Before throwing her hat in the race for Elected Presidency, she had been a fervent card-carrying member of the People’s Action Party (PAP). Her close ties to PAP has raised concerns about her lack of independence should she be elected, and the role she would play in safeguarding of our reserves.

Her naming of Sheng Siong CEO Lim Hock Chee as one of her key Presidential Election campaign members has also not helped ease many people’s unease about her independence.

Sheng Siong heavily linked to PA and PAP?

Sheng Siong supermarket chain is run by the Lim family.

According to its annual report, its CEO Lim Hock Chee (BBM) and his brother Chairman Lim Hock Eng (PBM) are both grassroots leaders heavily involved with the People’s Association (PA).

CEO Lim Hock Chee was first awarded PBM by PM Lee in 2006 and Long Service Award in 2007. He was later awarded the BBM in 2014. The followings are some of his appointments:

  • Chairman of Marsiling Community Club Management Committee (Marsiling CCMC)
  • Vice-Chairman of Marsiling Citizen’s Consultative Committee (Marsiling CCC)
  • Council member of Singapore Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCCI)
  • Vice-Chairman of Trade Association & Membership Committee in SCCCI
  • Committee member of Singapore Chinese Chamber Institute of Business
  • Committee member of MTI’s Retail Prices Watch Group (RPWG) in 2011
  • Committee member of IRAS’ Taxpayer Feedback Panel in 2012, 2014
  • Committee member of Tripartite Committee for Low Wage Workers and Inclusive Growth in 2012
  • Board member of Health Promotion Board in 2014
  • Committee member of MND’s Revitalise Heartland Shops Committee in 2015

Chairman Lim Hock Eng was awarded PBM by PM Lee in 2016. His appointments:
– Patron of Yio Chu Kang Citizens’ Consultative Committee (Yio Chu Kang CCC)
– Committee member of Community Outreach and Co-ownership Committee of CDAC in 2016

Coincidentally, CEO Lim Hock Chee serves as grassroots leader in Marsiling (part of Marsiling-Yew Tee GRC), whose MP was Halimah. She resigned as MP of Marsiling last month (7 Aug) so that she can run for the upcoming President Election.

In view of the void created by her resignation, PAP then decided to appoint MP Zaqy Mohamad from Chua Chu Kang GRC to “stand-in” as “grassroots advisor” for the Marsiling ward.

In the case of Chairman Lim Hock Eng, he serves as grassroots leader in Yio Chu Kang which falls under AMK GRC led by PM Lee.

People’s Association is People’s Action Party?

People’s Association (PA), gazetted as a government statutory board, has been closely linked to the PAP.

When Mr Lee Kuan Yew was alive, he once made a comment about how close the relationship was, between PAP and PA. He commented on what the People’s Republic of China officials had observed when they were visiting Singapore and said:

“They (PRCs) discover that the People’s Action Party (PAP) has only a small office in Bedok. But everywhere they go, they see the PAP – in the RCs (residents’ committees), CCCs (citizens’ consultative committees), and the CCs (community clubs).”

And in Singapore, all RCs, CCCs, CCs and grassroots organizations fall under the purview of PA.

Till today, everyone thinks that People’s Association is the outreach arm of the PAP, despite it being a statutory board under Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth. Which makes transparency and accountability questionable as it is akin to the civil service being used for political purposes.

BEING AS A PIONEER CITIZEN WHAT THE HELP EMPHASIE THE SCHEME THEY TREAT THE ELDERLYS WELL IN DEEP BOTTOM OF THEIR HEARTS TO LET THE WHOLE WORLD TGE WELFARE IS LOOK INTO THEIR DEEP HEARTS BY THE PAP. If there are 100 voters and 80 voters either spoil their votes or boycott the election; the winner does not express the political will of Singaporean.
Spoiling votes or walk away from voting in such an instance does it show national civil disobedience and an express disgust with the PAP government aristocratic arrogance and failure.

there is only one person thought my one vote cannot fo anything that would be correct. But if there is one million voters that think this way than they are the king maker for their indecision will become the biggest swing votes bloc that decides the winning party.

If most are sure pap candidate will win; does it make sense to boycott leaving every polling booth looks empty and deserted to create the biggest political fiasco in the voting history of Singaporean and that the people disagreeing with the PAP. More over the pap will have a hollow victory.

So far all posts against the Malay EP and PAP candidates are:
1 vote for strongest opponent and hope he wins. There are two pointers here, the PAP would not gone ahead with their candidate on a chance she may lose. 2nd point is the message that you are feeling hopeless and no choice but to play the PAP game plan.
2 Spoil votes or draw a box and tick for the Tan Cheng Bock. The message here is you are not happy and fed up with the government. But the winner still is the pap for spoilt votes not counted.
3 Boycott. The message is who the F… K you think you are. I will not play your political game. You have destroy the tenets of meritocracy of equality and breached the national concept of a multiracial society and created divisiveness. And to boot this whole hullabaloo is to protect and serve the PAP political power and not the interest of Singaporean.
If the boycott is massively overwhelming with spoilt votes the message is simply we will vote you white bullies of the voting grid and condemn the PAP political imprisonment of Singaporean.

So here’s a question or two: What if, in the years ahead, technology changes our economy and graduates are the vogue again? Is the PAP going to do another policy reversal? What if in future Singapore is handicapped by the dearth of university trained minds?

More importantly, what happens to those (like the couples who were pressurised to have no more than two children and the ones who paid wildly inflated prices for their flats) who could have and should have received their university education but didn’t because of the PAP’s inclination for short-term – and self-interested – fixes?

Yes agree. However we need to be prudent in this voting. If more than one candidate vote the less talk about candidate. This also show how discontented Singaporeans are.

Martin, Singapore need thousand of university educated fully awaken, fill with creative spirit and initiative ever willing to learn to experiment and capable, planted with the mechanism to get up even after failure never tiring. Whether they graduate from whatever so long the mind is seating squarely on firm shoulder, willing to wonder and wander, they will create a new prosperous civilisation for Singapore and Singaporean. The present landscape of scholars are weak knee, spineless and of no real use or relevant for Singapore future.

Bro do you know that quite a majority knew what you know ? I am a true blue Singaporean and hope you are too, and I am certainly not stupid and so are my family and my circle of Singaporean friends. Don’t be rude young man. There is much more for you to learn and find out out there.

Im not being rude, I’m just stating the facts my Friend. If u are in the inner circle good for u where there is no Longer a meritocracy society in singapore anymore so pls don’t tell me people work for it to get to the TOP. Until that day is restored u will have my respect.

Richard Ong you seems to be quite bitter with the current state of affairs and felt meritocracy is dead. Allow me to share with you but first let me put it straight to you , I am nowhere near any inner circle if there is one. You are about my sons age and he shares the same sentiments as you 4 years ago. I have to consul him to accept that the world out there is not far, explain to him the black and white of the commercial world and the importance of a degree to open more doors. The rest he has to go and have a first hand experience of the hard knocks of society as his dad is not in the inner circle. He work hard and work smart and is always ahead of his peers. Obviously the going was tough but he plodded on. Now he is in management and still working hard and smart. Of course if his dad is in the inner circle , maybe his path will be a lot easier . There is still meritocracy and they depend on how you managed yourself and plan your flow chart . Go get persue your dreams. No one can stop you , not even the GOV , only yourself . I wish you success . Please be kind to yourself and don’t give up . Stop complaining and start planning for yourself . Singaporean are not stupid and nobody will tell you what to do, they can only share and it is up to you .

Richard Ong , Chris Chow so do the right thing as gentlemen since you both called me stupid , zombies and illogical and with all your wrong assumptions . I am true blue Singaporean not oppies nor pappies and I do not depend on the GOV all my life to get to what I have today . Last election I voted M Ravi fyg

Mr Tan after all of what u have sad. Do u still condone and support the actions of the incumbent govt after all the happens in singapore that made singapore a laughingstock internationally. You will know the answer to yourself whether if u are brainwash or zombie.

Michael Aloysious Chee what is your point, first Richard called Singaporean stupid and that includes himself. Now you imply Singaporeans are gullible which includes you . Are you guys on drugs or trolls ?

Richard Ong don’t digress I can only say I have full confident in my ability to handle and decide what I want for myself and family . Regardless of who runs the GOV . I certainly and up till now do not need to resort to calling anyone stupid , zombies or illogical , similarly I am puzzled by the kind of reasoning or arguments and still respect your rights to opine. Whether I am brainwash or whatever is non of your concern . I have no intention to get personal like what you n Chris Chow did. I refrain from being rude as I understand you 2 are still young and still learning. Be happy young boys! Cheers!

Considering you being older should have more wisdom and foresight then the younger ones. But u don’t seems to be, and U are not doing the younger generation a favour and u are not helping singapore by being adamant and ignorant on how this govt has turn out to be.

SHE CERTAINLY KNOWS HOW TO CURRY FAVOUR HER BOSS.

LIKE MY INCIDENT, SHE REFUSED TO TAKE UP MY CASE WHEN I WAS WORKING IN THE CIVIL SVS WHEN SHE WAS THEN AN NTUC EXECUTIVE. IT WAS HER DUTY AND RESPONSIBILITY TO HELP AN UNION MEMBER.

OTHERWISE, HOW COULD SHE GAINED FAVOUR TO BECOME CRONY MP, THEN TO PARLIAMENT SPEAKER AND NOW APPOINTED TO RUN FOR PRESIDENT!!

Actually what’s wrong with Sheng siong CEO showing support for Halimah? Halimah quit PAP so she’s independent right? I am surprised TISG really link her and PA to PAP. I mean if I know her personally I would want to give my support also right?

    • 0

You have your rights to whoever you want to support. Go check out the relationship between LHL and Mr lim . At the same time MR Lim involvement with PA and Pa grassroots organization . Do you want a President who forsake her father and therefore her Indian Origin ? Anyway it is still your rights to vote and I respect that tks

spoiling votes will not help as they are not counted at all. it’s worst than not turning up at polling stations. There will be someone elected anyway. if you do not feel she can be independent, vote him. example: 10 vote counts and 3 voted her she gets 30%. but 10 vote counts and 3 voted her but 5 spoilt votes she gets 60%! correct me if I’m wrong pls. Tan Juan Sim

No need to go so far to believe all the pastp residents claiming to have cut all ties with PAP. In the first place why are all the Unions only giving support to her, Tony Tan & other ex-pap affiliated candidates? Why dun support the othe candidates or better still stay away from supporting anyone during the while process?

  8. 0

    0

She should not get her party to support her if she wants a strong mandate, she get almost the whole government machinery to back her after elected will she dare to openly opposed the PAP if situation arises.

This is slapping ourselves. When have we ever restricted the race eligibility in the pass, over our president? Now, he is only telling the world that we used to forbid other race to be a president, and he is the good guy to open up to the other races.

How can she be disloyal to PAP after her resignation. All the more she will be beholden to PAP for setting her up to be the President?
If she turns around and like a harimau gives PAP a bite then she is no bloody good as a human being.
    Right?
So Halimah jangan chakap bohong! Jangan tipu.

Spoken to some malay friends …they found this reserved election is actually an insult to thier race..

Shows that up to date.. they are still being marginalised ….. need govt support … even in the highest office …

The true aim is to restrict TCB from contesting.. change the rule …. set the bar high… but not enough can qualify… end up with this current bunch …

    Game Plan backfired…

Last time Chua Thian Poh also supported Tony Tan. So there’s nothing new and nothing wrong with Sheng siong CEO showing support for Halimah. I mean he is also singaporean, so what if he is a grassroots leader? Stir stir stir only…

If she is trully a sincere person wanting to serve, she should not canvas or use her former party n his coterie to get support. She should let Singaporeans choose her on her own merits. If she has none to show then she is best advised to quit.
