The Royals of the Kelantan state drew fire from netizens who on Facebook showed support to Mahathir Mohamad after a title given to the former PM was revoked by the Kelantan palace.
Supporters of the Bersatu party, the party of Mahathir who is now the de-facto leader of the opposition, has rallied behind the elderly statesman in a massive show of support.
The supporters also showed little concerns for the Royals, attacking them and pulling PM Najib Razak and his wife in the attacks on Facebook.
The title, the Darjah Kerabat Al-Yunusi (DK) was gifted to Mahathir in 2002 by then Sultan Ismail Petra, who is the father of current ruler Sultan Muhammad V, who is also the present Yang di-Pertuan Agong.
The award is said to be limited to 25 recipients at any given time and is usually reserved for royalty.
News of the revocation has spread over the internet like wildfire but it is the Palace that has seen the backlash with scathing comments from the supporters of Mahathir, wrote WFTV today.
Facebook users are not holding bars against the palace or the Royals and are showing total support to Mahathir.
“Millions of Malaysians are behind you,” said one comment, which added: “TUN M, it’s ok pingat (medals) all no use. Most important you have millions of Malaysians behind you. God Bless you always.”
The comments were mostly against the Royals, and in favour of the elderly statemen, said WFTV.
One comment in Malay said: Golongan bangsawan dalam negara kletokrasi ni semua tak berguna… Tunjuk la kat kita 1 je guna nya raja2 kat orang melayu…
It means: “The nobility in the country of kleptocracy is useless … Show us any of the Royals that are useful to our people…,”
