SINGAPORE: In a social media post over the weekend, Workers’ Party Secretary-General Pritam Singh gave a shout-out of sorts to some of the elderly at Eunos, the ward he’s been representing in Parliament since 2011, whom he says have shown the way to age gracefully.

Mr Singh had joined the Walk-to-Bond programme at the ward on Saturday (Oct 31), which was followed by Tea with Residents at the void deck of Block 133, and was thankful that clear skies allowed the initiatives to push through.

“Phew! No haze! Lucky the winds have continued to be kind, like they were for the most part of the part of the week,” he wrote.

A number of senior citizens joined the activities that morning, and Mr Singh wrote about one in particular, “Aunty Jenny,” whom he called “a beacon of positivity” and of whom he is “incredibly proud.”

He added: “Even a major surgery can’t wipe a smile from her face! That spirit is an important aspect of ageing — making peace with yourself and remaining upbeat and positive, no matter what life throws at you. Easier said than done, but Eunos has thrown up quite a few role models over the years.”

The WP chief is speaking from experience, because if there were ever a time when life threw many things at Mr Singh, 2026 is it.

This year has come with challenge after challenge, from a vote taken on Jan 14 to determine his suitability as Leader of the Opposition to his removal from the position by Prime Minister Lawrence Wong the following day.

In August, he was struck off the rolls of advocates and solicitors after the Law Society initiated disciplinary proceedings against him in relation to having been found guilty of two counts of lying to a parliamentary committee on February 17, 2025, and fined S$14,000.

However, he is arguably emerging from these challenges stronger than ever, enjoying the support of both the WP and the public.

In June, a “supermajority” of cadres had voted for Mr Singh to remain as party chief, and many in Singapore have expressed the hope that this chapter is finally over. /TISG
