Build the next 70 together: Workers' Party marks 69th anniversary, asks Singaporeans to become monthly donors
SINGAPORE: The city-state’s most important opposition party saw its 69th year of “working for Singapore” on Tuesday (Nov 3), and its secretary-general, Pritam Singh, took the opportunity to call for more support, asking Singaporeans to help the WP “build the next 70” years.
Mr Singh’s statement, posted on the WP’s social media accounts and shared by several of the party’s key figures, went back to the WP’s earliest days.
“On 3 November 1957, David Marshall founded the Workers' Party at the Hokkien Association Hall on Telok Ayer Street. He did so with the conviction that Singapore would be much stronger with diverse voices, robust debate, and a parliamentary democracy where different perspectives are heard and respected,” he wrote, adding that this conviction “remains very much alive.”
The WP chief added that the result of last year’s General Election revealed how united Singaporeans are “in wanting to work for Singapore,” but framed this in terms of providing a substantial check on power, which required those who’ll do the work not only during elections but at other times as well.
Mr Singh further pointed out that the WP does not have institutional support, adding that all its wins have been financed by its members, MPs, and like-minded Singaporeans.
“We are here today because each gave what they could,” he wrote.
Therefore, individuals who are able to give to the WP each month are vital, as they allow the party to plan ahead. Donations need not be in large sums, as each amount counts toward the party’s everyday activities as it continues “to serve as a rational, responsible, and respectable voice for Singaporeans.”

Singapore citizens can give $20, $69, or any other amount each month, and may do so here, he added. Singaporeans who wish to volunteer may also do so here.
Mr Singh went on to thank the people who have already given to the party, and expressed the hope that they will keep on doing so in the years to come.
“We look forward to building the next 70 together with you, in #WP70 and beyond,” he added. /TISG
