SINGAPORE: A man asking on the social media platform Threads whether it is difficult for a Singaporean to get a marketing job in Kuala Lumpur sparked discussion among netizens.

In a screenshot of his now-deleted post shared on a Reddit forum, the man asked: “Realistically speaking, is it hard for a Singaporean to get a job in KL in marketing? Singapore’s job postings are so bad.”

The man who posted the screenshot said it’s interesting that some Singaporeans are considering job opportunities in KL. Meanwhile, commenters questioned whether Singapore’s job market had become so difficult that working in Kuala Lumpur was worth considering.

One said: “Is the job market this bad in SG? I think as a fresh graduate, Singaporeans would much rather work in SG since they have housing and easy transport. The cost of living dollar per dollar is also better. In Malaysia, they need to rent and get a car. Only to get a mediocre salary.”

Others, however, felt that moving to Kuala Lumpur would not necessarily be easier, particularly if the person were earning a local salary.

“If the person goes to JB, maybe I can understand it a bit. But KL? Nope, living standard is almost as high or higher than SG depending on what items, but cooking at home and buying a car is definitely cheaper than SG, although the traffic jam is another topic,” one commenter wrote.

A third, meanwhile, added, “Most people who work in KL don't live in KL. They live about an hour or more away where housing is much cheaper. Those living in the KL area are prolly expats, tourists, or rich Malaysians who have their own business.”

While Singaporeans may be wondering if they could get jobs across the Causeway, it seems Malaysians are also considering what Singapore has to offer. Just last month, another Malaysian wondered if a higher-paying job offer in Singapore was worth the commute from Johor Bahru. /TISG
